UNIBEN Expels 5 Students Over Unionism
The management of the University of Benin has dismissed five students for leading a protest against hike in tuition.
It was gathered that most of the affected students were members of the Students Union Government of the school.
They were also barred from holding offices on campus.
The students were accused of organising a students’ demonstration on November 24, 2017, due to the hike in tuition
According to the school, the action was meant to disorganise the institution’s 47th Founders’ Day Lecture and the 43rd Convocation Ceremony.
Confirming the university’s action on Monday, Public Relations Officer, Michael Osasuyi, revealed that two of the erring students were suspended for two academic sessions.
He further noted that the others will miss one academic session each.
Osasuyi said the affected students are: current President of the Students Union, Osamudiamen Ogbidi; Justus Aidenagnon, Innocent Momodu, Goodnews Ehiabhi and Patrick Majekodunmi.
The SUG Vice President, Frances Okogwa, will be in charge of the body in acting capacity until elections are conducted.
“A committee was set up to investigate whatever transpired. With the committee’s findings, the matter was sent to the disciplinary committee,” Osasuyi told Punch.
