Rohr Eyes German-Born Goalkeeper For World Cup
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr says he is lining up young German-born Fortuna Dusseldorf goalkeeper Maduka Okoye for the 2018 World Cup.
The three-time African champs are in search of a first-choice goalie after Karl Ikeme was hospitalised with Leukaemia.
However, the Franco-German, who is in Russia for Friday’s World Cup draw, told Own Goal that the 18-year-old will be among the players to be added to the side for next friendly games.
“There’s another goalkeeper we have in our sight now. He plays with Fortuna Dusseldorf in Germany, Maduka Okoye, born in Germany but has agreed to play for Nigeria,” he said.
“We will look at him in the coming games to see if he will be able to push for a spot in the team we are preparing for the World Cup.”
Okoye was born in Germany to Nigerian parents. He has not made his debut for the first team of the second division club.
